The i2CAT Foundation is looking for a Data engineer who is willing to get involved in exciting Research and Innovation projects in the framework of the Horizon Europe, and the Catalan and Spanish research programs.


The suitable candidate will join the research area of Distributed Artificial Intelligence. This area holds expertise in AI (Computer Vision, ML, DL and optimization problems) and Big Data (heterogeneous data integration, ETL, secure data sharing and data spaces); and applies this knowledge to the verticals of ambient intelligence, mobility, telecommunications, manufacturing, energy, first responders, sustainability and cybersecurity.


This open position is oriented towards the data engineering part of the team, and will involve working on building robust, efficient and secure data processing and sharing solutions to get the data ready for our data scientists to apply AI and ML algorithms.


Our team is an active player in the European research ecosystem and participates as partners or subcontractors in other R&D projects. Our area also offers professional services to relevant industry and SMEs.


The selected candidate that will join i2CAT will start working in the following projects side by side with our Catalan and European partners:


  • UNBLUR: AI for Emergency Services, is an R&D project for a startup that has been awarded with an EIC accelerator grant. The role of i2CAT in this project is to provide new data and AI functionalities to the Unblur incident command software.

  • MOSAIC: an R&D project focused on data sharing and integration of different data sources in the Smart Mobility sector. DAI will utilize the International Data Spaces architecture and its different components to achieve these goals.

  • LOOMING FACTORY: an R&D project in the Industry 4.0 sector where i2CAT will utilize the International Data Spaces architecture to implement secure and privacy-aware data sharing solutions of data originating from inside our partners’ factories.

She/He will develop the following tasks in the projects above listed, and in new projects that will arise.


  • Participate in the design of innovative data processing and sharing solutions based on state-of-the-art reference architectures and tools

  • Participate in the development of R&D solutions using a variety of tools and programming languages (Java, Python, Matlab)

  • Analyze and discuss technical requirements with the clients and end users

  • Participate in the writing and editing of the documents and deliverables associated with the projects

  • Participate in the writing of new R&D project proposals

Requisitos mínimos

Minimum requeriments:


  • BSc in engineering, mathematics or similar

  • Good knowledge of data engineering, data connectors and databases.

  • Experience building and maintaining data collection and processing pipelines

  • Analytical mind-set able to propose solutions to new and known problems and carry on research proactively

  • Proven experience with at least two of the following programming Languages: Python, Matlab, Java and C++.

  • Expertise in projects and tasks management in Agile tools (ex: Jira Altassian)

  • Excellent English level, both written and oral.

  • Pro-active individual who can work with loosely defined goals.

  • Good communication skills.

Desired requeriments:


  • MSc related to Data Engineering or equivalent experience

  • Experience with message brokers and event processing tools: MQTT, RabbitMQ, Apache Kafka

  • Knowledge of European data initiatives (International Data Spaces, GAIA-X)

  • Experience in data collection and processing in IoT and Industry 4.0 projects

  • Professional level in Spanish and Catalan
